Three months without Sugar: Week 1 Update

I have now been without added sugar for a week (for what counts as sugar, please see my previous post).  So today I decided to give myself an extra challenge.

We have a community meal tomorrow.  My husband and I have organized a caterer to prepare some things, as it is our wedding anniversary, but our resources are limited, and we were not able to ask her to make any sweet foods, so I am baking.

As I write, my double chocolate cheesecake raspberry brownies are sitting in the oven, and I’m getting ready to prepare some lemon bars.  I have to ‘fess up and tell you that these brownies are one of my favourite sweet things.   It is so tempting to lick the bowl clean of molten, glossy chocolate or to sneakily ensure that a morsel (or more than one) finds its way to my mouth en route to the pan.  I can tell you, though, that it didn’t happen that way.  Not one mouthful passed my lips.  I do confess that a trace of icing sugar lingered in the air after I had measured it.  I tried not to inhale, but unlike Bill Clinton (allegedly), it was unavoidable.

I won't ever look like this girl, but I can be in control of sugar too.

I won’t ever look like this girl, but I can be in control of sugar too.

Some years ago I went to a therapist, who told me I had no self-control.  So please don’t think I have super-strong willpower; I don’t.  And don’t think I wasn’t tempted to nibble.  The divine smell alone had me drooling.  What kept me away was the thought of letting you, my readers down by having to confess that I had only lasted a week, and believe me, I would have confessed.  You are my motivation to keep going, and I thank you all, whoever and wherever you are.

I was so excited when someone asked if she could join me on this challenge.  My reply was, “YES, PLEASE”, and that is my response to any of you who would like to take part.  Please leave me a comment or send me an email if you want to be free of sugar until Christmas.  In case you need convincing, after a week I am experiencing the following benefits:

  • More energy
  • Better sleep
  • Weight reduction (around 4-5lbs in my case)

I would be delighted for you to join me.  After all, you have nothing to lose but sugar!

Is it too late to start? I need to stop eating chocolate. Last night I ate 2 large bars of cadburys chocolate. Im looking after my mum this week and I keep eating her supplies of chocolate, replacing them, eating the replacement bars. Usually I don’t have chocolate in the house, it never lasts, and we have a tesco express 2 minutes away. Sometimes I sit at night waiting for 10pm so I know they are shut and I can’t dash in to buy chocolate.

Hello Carolyn and welcome to my website. It’s never too late to start, and you can definitely succeed! I have a corner shop 2 minutes away, and I used to go there all the time to buy things, not always the most healthy ones either, so I can empathise with your situation. I find I don’t need that any more; I am free, and you can be too. You can read through my previous posts for ideas, inspiration and homework, and you can always email me at the address on the website for more personal support. This must be a challenging time for you, and I hesitate to make recommendations that are personal to you on a public forum, so do please get in touch via email if you would like to chat further. I hope to hear from you very soon.
